Westbrook, Maine – September 26, 2025 – The Regional Transportation Program (RTP) is excited to announce it has been awarded two discretionary grants from the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) to expand local transportation options in Cumberland County.
RTP will receive:
• $99,576 to launch a microtransit pilot in the Town of Harrison
• $88,139 to launch a microtransit pilot connecting Gorham and Standish
These community-based pilot programs will give residents in rural towns more reliable access to essential destinations such as grocery stores, medical appointments, jobs, and community services. Unlike fixed bus routes, microtransit uses smaller vehicles and flexible routing to better match the needs of riders in areas where traditional transit isn’t available or practical.
“We hear from people every day who are struggling to get where they need to go—whether that’s seniors in rural towns, workers without reliable transportation, or families trying to get to school and childcare,” said Don Libby, Executive Director of RTP. “These new services will make it easier for our neighbors to stay connected to their communities, while helping us strengthen transit access in towns that have been underserved for far too long.”
The discretionary grant program, funded by the Maine Legislature, was designed to support projects that increase transit service, expand access in rural areas, and remove barriers for people who need safe and affordable transportation. RTP’s strong track record of delivering community-focused transit services made it a key recipient of this year’s funding.
